One of the advantages of being with Amazing Spaces is that we are in touch with our international clients, the CPA (Commercial Producers Association), SAASP (SA Association of Stills Producers) and we attend expos abroad. All of this empowers us to be informed of what is happening in the marketplace and what the trends are.
Of course, you’re not going to do all this for the fun of it. But how much is reasonable to charge to rent your location? Amazing Spaces will always negotiate the best price on your behalf, as, although we need to keep our clients happy, we also need to retain our locations! In keeping with what the industry can bear, the exchange rates, our competition (other countries), our margins, price discounts to the customers and more, our recommended rates are as follows (nett to location):
(Full day = 12 hour day; half day = 6 hours, max 15 people on set)
Between R 4,000 – R 8,000 per day. Depending on how many shootable areas you have and the style/ marketability / demand of your home.
Commercials, TV, Film:
(14 hour day, approx 60 people on set)
Between R7, 000 – R12, 000 per day for interior/ exterior use. Between R5, 000 – R 8,000 per day for garden use only. Please note that for 'prep' and 'wrap' days we charge 50% of the fee.
Dynamics vary dramatically – type of event, number of people, and more, but generally between R8, 000 – R40, 000 per day.
Depends on the type of client (leisure, corporate, production team), number of people, but generally between R3, 000 to R6, 000 per day, or between R1,200 and R1,700 per room.
You may think your property is worth more than this, however we have to keep things in perspective. The film industry is no longer a cash cow; and recent years have been very difficult with much of our business moving to other destinations such as Argentina. The main reason for the move was cost, and Cape Town has been blamed for its high prices. The strength of the exchange rate also plays an important role here. Occasionally foreign productions do have dizzying budgets, however the harsh fact is that Cape Town is in direct competition with more than 350 other film centres around the world. Spain, Argentina, Mexico, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Australia all offer excellent locations, cost-competitive prices, great crew and a determined work ethic. Our prices have seen some fairly massive hikes in the last few years, with the result that film producers have looked elsewhere for their locations. We want the industry to be sustainable; therefore we need you to be fair and reasonable with the price of your location.
